#WURD2021
What Is WURD?
World Ultrarunning Day 2021 is the inaugural worldwide celebration of the sport of ultra-distance running.
Ultra-distance running, or just ultrarunning for short, is technically defined as an organised footrace covering any distance beyond 26.2 miles, the length of a standard marathon. But to the tens of thousands of people who take part it’s much more than that; it’s a way of life, a common bond between themselves and other like-minded people. Friendships are formed across boundaries as individuals push their personal limits; challenging themselves against the landscape, the elements, and other runners.
World Ultrarunning Day seeks to unite ultra communities wherever they are around the globe, via this website and social media with the hashtag #WURD2021. It’s a call to action for each of us to take time to celebrate this unique sport. To share stories with others, in real-life and across social media, of the where, what, why and when people run long. We want to welcome in people who are interested in the sport, to champion those already in it, and to spread the word to those who haven’t yet heard about it.
How Can I Join In?
World Ultrarunning Day or WURD2021 for short is kicking off with a collective ultra-run around the world. We want to unite ultrarunners across the globe and it’s simple for you to get involved.
- Join the running club at www.strava.com/clubs/wurd.
- Share your involvement – post a pic to Instagram or Facebook. Tweet how many miles you’ve run.
- Use the #WURD2021 hashtag so we can see what you’re up to. We’ll re-share how well you’re doing on our social platforms too.
- Follow us and join the conversations @TheUltraMag on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
- Keep running! Over the next 12 months we want the WURD2021 club to run around the world… as many times as we can.

World Ultrarunning Day on Strava
We’ve set up a Strava group to help celebrate World Ultrarunning Day together, and it’s free to join from wherever you are in the world. Just go to https://www.strava.com/clubs/wurd
When you join, all the miles that you run and add to Strava will be added to your total, and we want to see how many miles we can clock up together in a year. Can we go round the world? How many times? Can we reach the moon?
Our sponsor, ULTRA magazine, has pledged to plant a tree for the first 100 runners that clock up more than 1,000 miles after May 1st. So, what are you waiting for, get running and do your bit for the planet!
